The Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) has officially released the much-awaited notification for the recruitment of Assistant Loco Pilots (ALP) for the year 2026. Eligibility Criteria

A. Educational Qualification

To apply for the ALP position, candidates must possess a specific technical background. The following qualifications are accepted:

  • Matriculation (10th Class) pass plus ITI from recognized institutions (NCVT/SCVT) in trades such as Fitter, Electrician, Instrument Mechanic, Millwright/Maintenance Mechanic, Radio & TV, Electronics Mechanic, Motor Vehicle, Wireman, etc.

  • OR 3-year Diploma in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, or Automobile Engineering.

  • OR A Degree in the engineering disciplines mentioned above (B.E./B.Tech).

B. Age Limit

  • Minimum Age: 18 Years

  • Maximum Age: 30 Years

  • Age Relaxation: Standard government norms apply—5 years for SC/ST, 3 years for OBC (Non-Creamy Layer), and additional relaxations for Ex-Servicemen and PwBD candidates.

C. Medical Standards (A-1 Category)

The ALP role is safety-critical. Candidates must meet the A-1 Medical Standard:

  • Physical Fitness: Fit in all respects.

  • Vision: Distance vision must be 6/6, 6/6 without glasses. Near vision must be 0.6, 0.6 without glasses.

  • Mandatory Tests: Must pass tests for Color Vision, Binocular Vision, Field of Vision, and Night Vision.

Selection Process: The 4-Stage Journey

The selection process is rigorous and designed to test both the knowledge and the psychological aptitude of the candidate.

  1. First Stage CBT (CBT-1): A screening test consisting of 75 questions (Mathematics, Mental Ability, General Science, and General Awareness).

  2. Second Stage CBT (CBT-2): This stage has two parts. Part A (Maths, Reasoning, Basic Science & Engineering) determines your merit. Part B is a qualifying test based on your relevant trade.

  3. Computer-Based Aptitude Test (CBAT): Commonly known as the “Psycho Test,” this evaluates your reaction time, concentration, and memory.

  4. Document Verification (DV) & Medical Examination: Final cross-checking of all original certificates and a strict medical fitness checkup.

Salary and Career Growth

An Assistant Loco Pilot starts at Level 2 of the 7th CPC Pay Matrix.

  • Initial Basic Pay: ₹19,900

  • Allowances: Including DA, HRA, and the highly lucrative Running Allowance (based on distance traveled).

  • Total Monthly Gross: Ranges between ₹30,000 to ₹45,000 depending on the location and kilometers clocked.

  • Career Path: ALP → Senior ALP → Goods Train Manager (Driver) → Passenger Train Manager → Mail/Express Train Manager.

  • General/OBC/EWS: ₹500 (₹400 is refunded after appearing in CBT-1).

  • SC/ST/Ex-SM/Female/Transgender/Minorities: ₹250 (Full ₹250 is refunded after appearing in CBT-1).
