The Selection Process
Securing a position as an ALP involves completing five successive appraisal phases. Failing any individual stage terminates the recruitment progression.
[Stage 1: CBT-1] ➔ [Stage 2: CBT-2] ➔ [Stage 3: CBAT] ➔ [Stage 4: Document Verification] ➔ [Stage 5: Medical Exam]
Phase 1: First Stage CBT (CBT-1)
This acts as a preliminary screening mechanism to filter out excess applicants. The scores achieved here are not counted toward the final merit ranking, but candidates must achieve category-specific qualifying scores (40% for UR, 30% for OBC/SC, 25% for ST) to progress.
-
Core Curriculum: Mathematics, Mental Ability (Reasoning), and General Science mapped to standard 10th-grade syllabi.
Phase 2: Second Stage CBT (CBT-2)
The marks secured in this stage form the foundation of the final employment ranking. The paper is broken into two distinct components:
-
Part A (100 Marks): Assesses core cognitive areas including advanced Mathematics, General Intelligence, Reasoning, and Basic Science/Engineering concepts. This segment contributes 70% of the weight to the subsequent merit selection lists.
-
Part B (Qualifying Only): Tests trade-specific technical competency matching the candidate’s selected ITI or Engineering background. A strict minimum score of 35% is mandatory for all applicants regardless of social category.
Phase 3: Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT)
Commonly referred to as the psychological evaluation or psycho-test. It analyzes cognitive reflexes, attention patterns, spatial scanning, and situational safety thinking.
-
Weighting: The scores obtained in the CBAT contribute the remaining 30% toward the final merit list formula.
Phase 4: Document Verification (DV)
Candidates who match the combined merit metrics of CBT-2 (Part A) and CBAT are called for verification. All original academic certificates, caste documents, technical transcripts, and identity cards are scrutinized against the inputs provided in the online form.
Phase 5: Detailed Medical Examination (DME)
The final stage involves a comprehensive physical and ophthalmic checkup conducted by specialized Railway Medical Officers to certify absolute conformance with the A-1 visual matrix.
Step-by-Step Online Application Procedure
Candidates must navigate the centralized portal methodically to minimize the chance of rejection during automatic algorithmic processing.
